2012 — 16 November: Friday

A moisty misty start to a cool November morning out there. And a 20% chance of "precip". Oh well, ever onward. Having first grabbed all this month's over-generous dollop of security patching bits'n'pieces, I've just finished running the Win8 installation upgrade 'advisor' utility on my dinky little laptop PC. Apparently I face even fewer potential compatibility roadblocks ahead of me1 should I choose to upgrade it from Win7 to Win8. Odd that Flash wasn't called out as a niggle on BlackBeast when I painlessly migrated (upgraded? Yes, I think so) that PC a couple of weeks ago.

Bless you!

I know damn' well I first read about the dangers of over-prescribing antibiotics way back in the late 1960s... yet this morning our Chief medical whatsit was trotted out on to the grown-up's radio station where she set about calmly telling us2 — in words of one syllable (it felt like) and as if this was some startling and unforeseen new discovery — that it was basically our patriotic duty to all please sit tight and endure colds and sore throats stoically for at least a week while Mother Nature gets the round tuit She needs to do Her antibody thing.

As I mentioned to my friend Carol over quarter of a century ago, it's an arms race we're literally doomed to lose. Ms Chief whatsit says that each time we take antibiotics we double our chances of having a drug-resistant infection six months later. (Yet another reason to steer well clear of my GP's waiting room, let alone horse-piddles.)

Shoot me now. No, belay that. I'd like some breakfast first, please. And another cup of E-coli.

I'm thinking...

... that, instead of whizzing down into Soton and whirling around among the shopping hordes in the drizzle, I shall stay comfortably warm and dry here in Technology Towers, treat myself to a croissant for 'lemonses', and curl up with Jane (Austen). Sounds like a plan to me. I shall submit it to the CEO... Approved.

Tediously predictable?

Once again, there seems to be just a teensy-weensy possibility that votes for and against certain films on IMDB have as much (if not more) to do with spite as anything else:

Twiglet voting

Interesting that one IMDB staffer voted, and awarded a "9". (I enjoyed the soundtrack music, by the way, and am playing it again.) The Kermode / Mayo film programme is about to feature an interview with Kristen Stewart if the tedious rubbish that is the Corby by-election bickerfest can be got out of the way in time. "Democracy in action" I suppose. The Lib-Dem managed to lose her deposit.

Just what the...

... world has been waiting for?

...but sometimes you want to share with another group, like your college roommates or your parents or a friend who isn't yet on Twitter.
That's why we're introducing the ability to email a Tweet directly from twitter.com — a feature that will be rolling out to everyone over the coming weeks. You can email a Tweet to anyone, whether they use Twitter or not...

What possible reason can there be for further fireworks tonight? It's a cold, dark, mid-November evening. I'm sure they're not celebrating success in the election of our county Police and Crime Commissioner. Or, perish the thought, perhaps they are!
