2012 — 15 June: Friday

Unprecedentedly1 I find myself (half-)listening to the main radio news two days in a row. Trouble is, it's nearly as annoying as reading "Private Eye". Announcing "Funding for Lending" — or throwing billions of pounds of 'new' money2 to the UK's High Street banks at low interest on condition that they pass this straight along to small businesses and home buyers. Without (yet) having worked out "the details".

Yeah, right. What could go wrong? Oddly, economists' opinions vary.

Back to music, methinks. [Pause] Until Brian the plumber shows up in a few minutes to do his gas-certifying thing. [Pause] It's raining. Again.

Recall the second plasma device in my living room? Its pilot light turned out to be so (comparatively) noisy in the quietness of my living room that I literally haven't run the thing once in the year since its last / first service. This may be just as well. Brian tells me B&Q have been coming in for some stick over a possible design flaw that may have led to a fatality. He'll be checking it for leaks but otherwise is happy for me to leave it on the inactive list.

All looking good, so far. [Pause] Well the heating system has a clean bill of health.3 Sadly my would-be cinema companion does not, so my planned visit to "Prometheus" this afternoon is now on 'hold'. I expect I shall wait for the Blu-ray. The house is currently very warm, as the system had to be left running on high for some of the tests. Phew!

I followed...

... a link from here (having a certain nostalgic fondness for Richard Neville, 'Oz' magazine and the like), and ended up here. Where I wandered a while among some excellent stuff.

A day of...

... considerable contrasts. Right now (18:38) the sun is shining. The water pressure in the central heating system seems to have stabilised on 1.1 bar — having dipped as low as 0.3 bar when it (and my house) initially cooled down. And my irritating throat feels red-hot, though it isn't. I think it's time for my next bite to eat. [Pause] Followed by a couple more from "The Mentalist", season #3.

Footnotes

1  For me.
2  "They" don't want the UK tax-payer to be left bearing the risk. How sweet. Does anyone stop to think where the State's "money" derives initially? Maybe we should indeed move to the leaf as the basis of our currency. Should be a good crop this year. No, wait, that way lies inflation...
3  Not counting the two dead bumble bees that had unwisely entered the premises at some point, reminding me of the old limerick about the flea and the fly in a flue.
