2009 — 15 March: Sunday

It's pretty cold out there right now (00:59 or so). Having watched Ghost Dog1 I've also just updated some of the iMac's software and am now actively thinking maybe it's time to get some sleep. But not while a couple of chaps from "Dire Straits" are playing live for Bob Harris. And not before I've sorted out the next picture of Christa:

Christa and the corkscrew hazelnut, August 2007

Funnily enough, I've actually trimmed this bush? tree? plant? a little just yesterday. Some of its tendrils (or whatever the technical term is) were grabbing at me while I was moving past it to retrieve one of the footballs for some of the kids. I know Christa worked on it regularly but not very often, and I confess I didn't touch it all last year. Next, I may even tackle one of her rose bushes. I seem to remember these can be cut back to an almost unbelievable extent. The pear tree is showing signs of new buds, too. Although I only got four fruit from it last year I was reassured to learn that it basically produces fruit every second year. We certainly got a good crop in 2007.

G'night. Yawn. At 01:11.

Sunshine before nine

Suggests promising weather for a little stroll in an hour or so. Breakfast first, plus a packed lunch to prep. These weekends are all "go" you know.

Half a lifetime ago, I remember borrowing from the Polytechnic library and reading a refutation of Einstein ("Science at the crossroads") by a chap called Herbert Dingle who couldn't ever get his head round the twins paradox. (I confess I sympathised.) Now it seems quantum entanglement may also be a step too far for some folk. But it's time to hit the road.

He's back

It's 17:29 and I've been back home for over 90 minutes, having swung by Waitrose for the next batch of foody stuff just before they shut. The walk was a very pleasant 6.36 miles of unbroken sunshine and mostly not too muddy, out at Ellisfield. Bluebells are coming along, but not out yet, of course. If the weather holds, we're hoping to go "do" Lepe in mid-week. Mike took another shot of a sign for me to tinker with, but it would have been basically the same joke as this, so I won't now bother...

I've inherited the unwanted parts of today's Sunday Times in which I was delighted to find quite a lengthy piece on the new film coming from Richard Curtis. I must say, it looks most promising. I know some people can't stand Mr Curtis, but I'm not one of them. And given that DJ Johnnie Walker was used as the consultant... (he's now talking to Marianne Faithfull — perfect listening for a Sunday afternoon).

Now (at 21:00) the great web page migration exercise is starting. All files have been transferred to their new home, and I'm powering up the virtual Dyson...

Footnote

1  I still regard this as the most approachable film Jim Jarmusch has yet made. And the music is superbly chosen, too. The Pioneer Blu-ray player did a very creditable job of the upscaling.
