2016 — 6 November: Sunday

I don't know whether it was the concentrated dose of fantasy lit or the 200 pages (so far) of non-Vogon poetry last night but here I am1 one cuppa down already, and emailing my friend Carol in NY to wish her "rots of ruck" in the upcoming election:

... we may even end up holding a boring, old-fashioned general election as the only tried-and-tested non-revolutionary route to any greater clarity of what this now semi-disunited kingdom actually wants.

Personally, I would prefer to start by cleaning up the issues raised by millionaire / billionaire ownership of media, the largely concealed lobbying of various over-sized financial interests (for want of a better term), and the reality-bending effects that their machinations have in the minds of many voters.

Heck, we could even try having a clearly-written constitution ... Still, one Good Thing: I doubt there will be another UK referendum for many years!

As for Clinton v Trump... where to begin? Leadership? What's that? We don't need us none of that nonsense!

Date: today

If my yawns continue...

... I may even head back upstairs. There is constitutional precedent for that. Double-dipping into the Land of Nod.

Today's skim...

... of the "news" still brings more heat than light. And very little cheer. [Pause] Nor is there much warmth out there on the hunt for the well-fired loaf. Despite the bright sunshine in a nearly cloudless sky. Brrr.

I must, it seems, enjoy my "triple-locked" baby boomer privileged State Pension and Winter Fuel Allowance before they are whittled away by the need to pay for Trident submarines (that benefit who, exactly?), a High Speed rail link (that benefits who, exactly?), and a third runway at Heathrow (that benefits who, exactly?). Not to mention the demands made by all that Quantitative Easing, and the fallout from this somewhat ill-judged Brexit business.

And that shiny new nuclear power station. Better not forget that and its clean-up costs.

Less seriously...

... I'm really enjoying the Chuck Lorre series "Mom" — I've just begun watching Season #2 — though I'm having difficulty regarding it as a comedy. Even though it's making me laugh. And the "New York Times" has just promised me (and everyone else) the next three days completely free access to all their digital coverage and analysis of the US Election. I doubt that will make me laugh quite as much.
