2016 — 15 January: Friday

Although I became a little tired of hearing the portentous phrase "This has all happened before, and it will all happen again"1 in the last couple of weeks, it does continually amuse me how some things come around again in the Great Cycle of Life (or whatever it is that "Destiny" is called these days).

I had been pointed to...

... some very clear, and unusually well-written, web 'design' guidelines written quite long ago by a kindred spirit, and read (with some amusement) material I could have written myself. Although it makes me feel somewhat less of a Neanderthal, I still feel slightly threatened as a species.

This all arose in the context of "Garrison Halibut".2 In service of which, I shall at some point soon be hooking my cassette deck's output directly to my minidisc recorder's analogue input. Here's a visual clue:

Richard Wortley is one of my favourite people for several unrelated reasons. Many are touched on here :-)

In slightly related news, I was delighted to confirm that whatever ailed the BBC's radio streams had reverted to its more amenable behaviour (and thus susceptibility to my habitual get_iplayer snaffling of their implausibly enjoyable "Late Junction" programmes) by yesterday evening — which is more than can be said for the appearance of my mains water so far today after yesterday afternoon's local pipework disruptions.

As and when...

... my friend Iris wakes up later today, I shall be toddling over to her place bearing backup devices, a dinky USB Hub, and my walking boots. The weather may yet change our tentative plans, but there's always lunch to fall back on. It's currently rather cool outside, but the barometer has twitched yet further upward.

Living my life...

... largely in the "slow" lane, I've remained equally largely uncontaminated by moral philosophers from Oxford. Perhaps it's just as well?

I once heard a philosopher tell a story about a student who asked him what he ought to do with his life. "Do what you want," the philosopher said. "But I don't want to do what I want to do," the student protested. "I want to do what I ought to do."

Nakul Krishna in Point

What I ought to do is make some breakfast! [Pause] Living life on the edge, I've just ventured into the never-before-used setting #10 on my washing machine — it purports to be a 40C Economy Wash. We shall see...

Much later

The PC of the Iris is now well-sorted and thoroughly backed-up... if I say so myself. Meanwhile, there are two more newcomers clamouring for some small part of my attention in due course:

And it was very nice to hear Garrison Halibut again for (I suspect) the first time in 35 years or so. But, in a sign of the times, I have shut my living room window. It's just too damn' cold out there. And I'm without the comfort of my favourite jumper until it's finished drying. It came out of the wash a lot heavier than it went in and has been exiled upstairs where it can drip into the bath tub. Brrr.

[Pause]

"Skeleton Twins" is quirky, but worth the effort. And only moderately toe-curling.
