2016 — 8 January: Friday
Since I can "go" for quite long intervals1 between even the slightest wish for alcohol I'll be mildly interested to see the effect (if any!) of the latest bullsh1t pronouncement of the Health Police.
The 14-unit limit has been chosen because at that point, your drinking leads to a 1% risk of dying from alcohol-related causes.
This has been deemed to be an acceptable level of risk as it is approximately the same risk that someone has when they do an every day task such as driving a car.
Not the way I drive, it isn't! Perhaps they mean "1% elevated risk"? Probability in this Quantum Age of Uncertainty is such a delightfully imprecise tool.
On a similar theme...
... what (if anything) to make of this?
To adapt Ernest Bramah:
To regard all bullsh1t as corrupting is wise, but to attempt to discriminate among the various degrees of pseudo-profundity is both foolish and discourteous
I won't be signing up to follow any tweeting by Deepak Chopra. Academia wasn't like this in my student days. Correction: aeronautical engineering wasn't. Who knows what pseudo-profound "research" those pesky upstarts the sociologists got up to?
Please can we...
... have our missile back?! (Link.)
This comment...
... made me smile:
And I haven't even (pace "Alice") had my breakfast yet.
This is traditionally...
... the time of year when my thoughts turn idly in the direction of new toys. I've noted this remarkably well-specified forthcoming Intel NUC kit that matches my preference for Linux Mint:
I suspect I could liberate a spare four inches or so of desktop space. Though I could hardly call it "BlackBeast Mk IV", could I?
Starry eyed. Wow!
I failed...
... to notice the rain until I nipped out to empty my kitchen scraps in the wake of my latest piece of crockpottery. I'm surrounded...
... by both rain and general cold yuckiness.
Rather later...
... I notice it's again pitch dark out there. In between sanity breaks, I've been chipping gently away at the, erm, infelicities of data content in my Videos listing, as extracted from Kodi and bludgeoned (by Python) into 'molehole'-compliance. I'm getting there. As is my latest crockpot, if the enticing aroma drifting in from the dining room is any guide. Yum. Just the thing for a cold, dark, winter's evening, methinks.
