2015 — 6 November: Friday

Say what you will1 about November — at least it has the decency to contain another example of IBM's generosity towards its former wage-slaves (aka a pension payment). Yippee!

It's drizzling...

... again. But I now know what a "Quine" is :-)

Saints preserve us!

I am, of course, and have long been a hopelessly-lost cause. But I'm left wondering; What happens when you're unable to read a trigger warning?

The campaign for trigger warnings represents its cause as an attempt to protect the vulnerable and the powerless from any potentially traumatic and harmful effects of reading. Those who are opposed or indifferent to the call for these warnings are condemned as accomplices in the marginalising of the powerless. Paradoxically, censorship, which once served as an instrument of domination by those in power is now recast as a weapon that can be wielded to protect the powerless from psychological harm.

I predict the UK's splendid education system will solve the problem in another couple of generations. Newspeak, anyone?

Personally...

... I'd pick a socialist every time, but that's just me and my warped outlook on life!

Socialists

Must be all that dangerous reading over far too many years.

And more has just arrived

Breaking off from my late but necessary pre-breakfast plum-stewing to open the door on a bedraggled Mr Postie who handed this over:

Non-Socialists

82.59% of the cost was postage and packing, by the way. 59 pence for a perfectly readable used hardback struck me as more than fair.

Today's culinary...

... treat (which has made it into the crockpot JIT for a noon switch-on) consists of some diced lamb, a diced Bramley, a can of chopped tomatoes in their 'natural' juice, and a frankly revolting-looking but interesting-smelling "Tagine" stew base picked at random from the Waitrose "Cooks' ingredients" shelf in lieu of their absent packs of root veg on my most recent visit. Tagine purports to be a concentrated Moroccan-style tomato stew sauce flavoured with a blend of aromatic spices. I shall not add the suggested cous cous, but have substituted a splash from my last bottle of 1991 Meisenheim wine. And the last of a pack of sour mango (just for fun).

I'm taking my inspiration from "Three Men in a Boat", it seems, and the episode of the Irish stew. Depending how daring I feel, I may yet chuck in some petit pois as the unholy mixture approaches criticality later this evening. Or, perhaps, eye of newt might be better?

Today's software...

... treat will be to investigate this.

SQLite studio

Though I shall certainly be heeding this morning's email warning — from one who knows — that hacking directly into Kodi's innermost SQL DB may, for several reasons, not be altogether a Good Thing.
