My innocent mistake on that occasion — that I shall now literally have to undo — was bolting the second of those steel shelf units to the front of the first, rather than to its side. That removed just a couple of inches too many of "depth" from the length now needed for the Mazda. It was fine, of course, for the titchy Toyota Aygo we had then, and was still (by good luck) just adequate for the slightly longer Yaris we replaced1 it by seven months later:
