2015 — 24 April: Friday

Having dispensed with the easy stuff1 one can turn, with relief, to an excellent (but profoundly depressing) essay and book review on the state and direction of an Ivy League Liberal Arts education across the Pond. (Shudder here.)

I've cautiously...

... sipped my first cuppa of the day, and will tackle a tiny bite of breakfast in due course. Heck, who knows? I may even stop carrying around a precautionary bowl... My temperature is back down within more normal limits, and my sense of humour regarding these periodic intimations of mortality remains basically intact. I have, as Miss Otis did in earlier times, declined the invitation to lunch today, however.

I really enjoy the "Cantus Arcticus" by Einojuhani Rautavaara. It's a piece that captivated me on first hearing, a while ago now. Recognised it as soon as I heard the bits of birdsong it incorporates when I stepped back into the living room.

Right! Time to risk a bite of brekkie, methinks. If I don't eat soon I shall waste away.

I'm rather hoping...

... this sprightly pair will help restore the spring to my step,2 too:

Book 1 of 2

Spotted in a recent review in El Reg.

Book 2 of 2

"Calvin and Hobbes" were a very classy act.

After today...

... and, of course, making the possibly mistaken assumption that the Winchester Probate Court received, and hasn't yet lost, the latest package of paperwork I sent them exactly two weeks ago, I ought now to receive the Grant of Probate and four "sealed" (that is, stamped) certified copies with which I can finally "collect in" the assets of dear Mama's little estate. Having discussed it with Big Bro, we're considering leaving her stash of Uncle ERNIE Premium Bonds in the prize draw for the remainder of the year. I did that with Christa's stash, after all, and picked up a useful £600 tax free in further prizes during the year after her death. A very minor-league compensation, but better than nothing.

Unusually...

... I've had to take a second Ibuprofen 24 hours later. But I'm pretty sure I'm basically on the mend. I confess I can think of absolutely nothing good to say about illness. Ever. Meanwhile, I've just watched the first four episodes of a TV show called "The Good Wife" and found myself rather enjoying it. "Game of Thrones" it is not. It's glossy, slick, but profoundly undemanding video fare. Which is about all I feel up to at the moment. My brain is clearly going soft.

No change there, then :-)

Footnotes

1  In this case, a pair of updates to the Synology NAS boxes to patch a Samba inadequacy (apparently). And to notice, and switch off, a sneaky "usage snooping" setting that I don't recall having seen before.
2  I mentioned UltraEdit was not without some idiosyncratic ideas about HTML highlighting. It's just put the word "step" in red, both here and above. Doubtless assuming I'm constructing a program loop. I fear my diary jottings are not so well-structured :-)
