2014 — 10 September: Wednesday

News of the (far) greater than expected complexity1 of the Stonehenge site stirs memories of a 1963 novel by Keith Laumer. It's lived largely undisturbed on my shelves since I last read it in 1968, and went on to treat it to one of my protective stick-on film covers in 1971 or so:

A trace of memory

I wonder when the Mayflower imprint disappeared? (I certainly assume it has.) [Pause] Laundry laundering, and there's a topping of stewed Shropshire prunes (aka damsons) to be lavished on my morning cereal. Yummy.

I really don't want...

... to believe that the Coen brothers' first film (Blood Simple — "The plot is an intricate clockwork of lethally intersecting misunderstandings") was screened 30 years ago this week. Perhaps I will do what Christopher Orr is documenting here. I have 14 of the 16 titles Orr will be re-watching.

Having bought...

... three cleaning products for the price of two (how canny am I?) I'm obviously too exhausted to use any of them just yet. Besides, it's nearly time for a spot of lunch. But it's a good start for some fairly late Spring cleaning this afternoon.

I can still remember hesitating for many months before buying Ry Cooder's 1978 "Jazz" album when it became available on CD. But it's steadily grown on me over the years, and — having just listened to it while I munched my fairly late lunch — I can no longer remember why I hesitated. Odd.

The Good Thing...

... about finding one of those "While you were out" cards from Mr Postie on your doormat when you return from a short post-prandial trip is that, on Wednesdays, Mr Postie's lair stays open until 20:00 so there's no great rush to find out whatever it was that was "too big to leave". On with the show. I think the next task on my prioritised little list is "make another cuppa".

Quite a while ago...

... in fact, in November 2009, I was delighted to get my ears on an excellent triple CD of tracks called "Refugees" that had all originally been issued on the old "Charisma" label:

CDs

Only today, when listening to a lovely mellow jazzy track called "Bed ain't what it used to be" by Brian Davison's Every Which Way from CD #1, did it dawn on me that this was the Brian Davison who had been one of the founding members of "The Nice". It takes a while, but I get there in the end.

As for what was "too big to leave"...

NJ #5 and All That Jazz BD

Meanwhile, I've just re-watched "Blood Simple". 30 years on, I have to admit it holds up pretty well. [Long Pause] The Blu-ray of Bob Fosse's 1979 film is just totally phenomenal.
