2014 — 16 August: Saturday

Niece #1 is the next item on my agenda1 if you exclude tea, brekkie, Brian Matthew, and (I suppose) getting dressed. The house is "boy clean" even though Peter and his g/f will not now be joining us. Some trouble with a building materials delivery, I gather.

When I am sent...

... a book review of this ilk — in this case, of Volume #1 of some turgid 10-volume saga — I no longer regret leaving L Ron Hubbard permanently off my reading list. It appeared in the NYT, I'm told:

... a paralyzingly slow-moving adventure enlivened by interludes of kinky sex, sendups of effeminate homosexuals and a disregard of conventional grammar so global as to suggest a satire on the possibility of communication through language.

As my informant said, it makes "Perry Rhodan"2 look like good literature. And there was me, wondering what not to read next...

Another 'Perry'...

... to watch out for:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry was indicted by a grand jury Friday, accused of two felony counts of abusing his power by eliminating funds for the state's ethics watchdog.

Mark Z Barabak in LA Times

I'm puzzled. What on earth would the citizens of Texas need with an ethics watchdog? Don't they all carry guns?

My niece...

... was safely rendezvoused with (despite local road chaos) mere minutes late, has been entertained and fed, allowed out into the back garden for a couple of her infernal ciggies, and is currently watching an episode of something made from a series of books she's enjoyed. While her Kindle is re-charging. And Muggins does the dishes etc. [Pause] And is now safely back en route to the Big Smoke on the 17:08 to Waterloo. Nice visit.

BBC Proms...

... are coming from the Albert Hall in 4.0 surround, decoded in, among others, IE11 under Win8.1 — cool! (FAQ.)

1  I've even charged up the smartphone and refreshed all its applications as she's threatened to send me a text from her train (or from the platform if she misses it).
2  Should you for any reason be unaware of that mighty material, I strongly suggest you keep it that way.
