2013 — 4 September: Wednesday

Busy, busy. Wheel out the (very nearly empty) 'green' bin1 for recycling, noting what looks like pleasant weather for today's walk. Obtain and install a useful DeDRM plugin into the (already excellent) Calibre so it can now open my Amazonian ebook purchases alongside those that are already free of DRM. Obtain and install yet another update to the more-than-useful AnyDVD program so it can continue to play on BlackBeast any and all DVDs legally acquired since 1998.

That sound you can hear...

... is me whirling around fixing breakfast and quickly packing a lunch. [Pause] Drake has, it appears, been revisited. Mind you, I still harbour2 the occasional doubt about intelligent life on the one planet we so far know is compatible with us, despite us doing nearly everything we can to despoil it. (Link.)

That sound you can now hear...

... is the clothes that are all swirling around inside the washing machine. Quite why (or how) we managed to choose one of our longer routes, and one that always seems to be uphill all the way, on a day that seems to be shaping up into a hot one, is a mystery. Still, the car has been stripped of everything not nailed down ahead of its ("big") service and MOT tomorrow and I'm now attempting to rehydrate with orange juice.

It occurs to me (occasionally) that I'm neither as young nor as fit as in the days of yore. Whenever they were.

Somewhat later

I've been giving some vague thought to my choice of evening entertainment. Not to mention feeding myself, and hanging up the washing... Domestic god, me. I also decided to see if Uncle ERNIE had relented and decided to be any more obliging towards me this month. He has, and will be flinging two of his little £25 cheques my way later this month. Ev'ry little helps.

This, after a nasty moment earlier when I was on the point of clearing out BlackBeast's "Recycle Bin" only to be brought up sharp by the knowledge that there was no way it should have contained nearly 10GB of files. That took a mite of anguished sorting out, though it may well have been caused by bringing every last byte of online storage back, erm, online. It occurs to me that I may not have cleared things out fully last time I did this. In which case, it was simply the data sins of the past coming around on Buddha's great wheel of spinning ferroso-ferric oxide to bite me once again.

I get that quite a lot, one way or another.

Much as I like...

... the Copernic Desktop search tool, I've now paid for licences twice. The first time (obviously) when I first installed it. The second time when my 'upgrade' from Win7 64-bit Ultimate to Win8Pro thoughtlessly threw away the installation. Now I find the upgrade / pre-order web-based process for Version 4 they've just offered to me (they know damn' well I'm a customer) refuses to accept my latest Serial Key as valid, and thus only offers me a third purchase. Not good enough, frankly. Twice-bitten, as they say...

Meanwhile, having first installed the DVD Profiler App on to my smartphone at the weekend, I've just finished putting it on to the Android Tablet PC (I hadn't realised until Brian told me today that it's a "buy once, install on to multiple devices" deal) which I've now parked practically on top of the wireless router to maximise the efficiency of the download process as I once again fetch the online profiles and data.

Footnotes

1  Nearly forgotten because the idiot who lives here (although assiduously checking the master kitchen worktop calendar you-should-excuse-the-word "system") had (naturally) forgotten to write "green" and "black" on the appropriate days for this month. Still, at least he'd turned it over to September...
2  And who can blame me?
