2013 — 27 June: Thursday

At this point in the morning1 I shall be satisfied if I can just stop sneezing by the time my lunch date rolls around. Basically, I'd managed to forget how troublesome pollen of certain types can be.

I was, as...

... is all too often the case, unaware of this delicious suggestion in an interesting essay by Michael Ruse until minutes ago:

Sepkoski quote

Although voiced (apparently) by the late paleontologist Jack Sepkoski I can't suppress the thought that it also seems a well-nigh perfect adaptation for our only slightly less prehistoric, socially-networked world, don't you think? (Smile if you're tweeting away on FaceBook — or whatever it is young folk do these days.)

Or, as Sartre (very nearly) put it: "Herd is other people".

I remain also...

... unaware of the essential difference (if any) between chaps with imaginary invisible friends, though it never stopped me enjoying the tales of Narnia as a child. If you look hard enough, I suppose this could be a clue:

In the 1960s, Lewis almost vanished from view: by the end of the century he had become a cultural icon. Initially, in America, he was read only by Episcopalians, and was upbraided by Evangelicals as a smoker, a drinker and a liberal.

AD Kenny in TLS

"Good God!" :-)

It's likely...

... some pollen yesterday could have been stirred up by the giant Buckyballs (golfballs?) we wandered past at one point:

Buckyballs

Good ol' Win8Pro. Given that I've just crashed Paint perhaps I should take a close look at the Win 8.1 preview? Though, reading the FAQ isn't exactly heartwarming. There's almost a tiny hint of a suggestion of a bit of an admission of defeat in the story here, too.

I think I can wait.

I'm very grateful...

... for the little bit of late afternoon rain we've had (and I've been enjoying) as it does tend to clear away the pollen; that was still causing me a mite too much nasal and ocular distress an hour or so ago. But, in the words of the song: "I can see clearly now." Or at least I could, if only I had the right glasses on. Time (18:08) for a light bite to compensate for the rather heavier bites I was treated to just a few hours ago. My recent listening has been a nice set of Vivaldi guitar concertos, mostly transcribed — I assume — from works intended for other instruments. I don't have all the details, for once.

This is...

... always worth another browse. (Link.)
