2013 — 16 May: Thursday
Apparently "all that lovely time" available to the retired needs to be filled with work and social networking1 if I'm to avoid plunging into depression and ill-health. The radio moved inexorably on from that to a "Thought for the Day" on weddings before I could get to the remote control and twitch the dial down a notch to healthier classical music. I've been retired for over six years and don't seem to be a gibbering idiot quite yet...
Perhaps I should embark on a political career :-)
Failing that...
... I could always get dressed and grab some pre-foodie-shopping breakfast before my chauffeur arrives in his cousin's Mercedes to whisk me off to lunch. That's not too depressing a prospect, surely? (Besides, there will be some Linux teasing involved.)
There is, it occurred to me overnight, a connection between Robert Crumb and Jon Longhi... and I have the 1998 book of short stories to demonstrate it:
Oh, and I finished my new annotated edition of "Pride and Prejudice" too. An excellent way of further enriching my enjoyment of that fine tale.
Progress!
There is, if you look closely, a subtle but crucial difference between the 'Screen Resolution' display here...
... and my previous attempt, back in February. It solves the problem of any windows on the right-hand Dell screen #2 diving into the cyberspatial "black hole" that opens for business whenever I switch off, or disconnect, the Kuro plasma screen #3 that lurks behind the code name IAG Repeater. I've also been able to uninstall that 60-day trial Actual Window Manager software before having to pay for it as it does nothing extra that I actually want.
The secret? It turned out I can use the ATI Radeon graphics card to drive my pair of Dell 24" screens, and use the HDMI output from the motherboard's own graphics chippery to drive the Kuro at the same time (as hinted here when I was reading my Windows 8 Administration book).
Still unsolved, despite Len's best efforts, is the problem of persuading the HDMI link to carry digital audio from BlackBeast as well as digital video. Mrs Google suggests it may actually be impossible with some PCs, so I need to keep my optical fibre link. (We both thought that using the motherboard's own HDMI output was more likely to guarantee audio success. We were both wrong.)
I never tire...
... of hearing Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring". Tonight's example is coming live from Glasgow as I do the dishes, potter along, and generally 'retire' (see above) before retiring.
Note to self: for gawd's sake remember to buy a new, non-stick baking tray. Or, better yet, explore some of the kitchen cupboards in case Christa had already done so. And chuck out the six-year-old cooking chocolate-flavoured stuff that isn't chocolate. G'night.
