2012 — 29 June: Friday

Before the day gets much older1 — and bearing in mind the imminent invasion from Battersea — I need to nip out to do something to change the state of Mother Hubbard's cupboard. Good job it's not too long before the next pension day, heh? Here's hoping what currently seems to be wind-driven drizzle out there in the grey murkiness disperses any wind-borne pollen and opportunistic biting insects... [Pause] Done.

It is a truth...

... universally acknowledged, that any item of Oriental audio/video gadgetry has to be festooned with superfluous (and very bright) LEDs. Whether this is a matter of pride or prejudice doesn't make any difference:

As you can see, the "specificatons" also regard it as more important to label each LED as a LED than as an identified input. No matter. In the interest of retaining an unburnt fovea centralis (look it up — my quirky memory already had it on file for some reason) I've typeset a little "cure" and stuck it over the LEDs:

Two thicknesses of paper do the trick. The left-most arrow covers the (always-on) power indicator.

But apart from that, this little hdmi switchbox is a minor miracle. It has made all the switching glitches that have plagued my system disappear. Furthermore, I realise now that I was being a bit paranoid in assuming that the DVDO Edge video scaler was still necessary. All my current hi-def kit does a perfectly competent job of scaling to 1080p. And I have no standard-def "legacy" kit to handle.

The diminishing...

... itch from the insect bite on the right elbow has now been joined by the itch on the back of my right calf on the site from which I've just carefully removed another blasted tick that was clinging on. I may have to revisit my policy of wearing shorts on our country walks.

While my lunchtime sausages gently sizzle under the grill, prior to merging with the salad, the apple sauce, and me (in that order) I'm left to ponder the mystery of the Asus Tablet PC which (although still burping discreetly to mark the arrival of any email) stubbornly refuses to light up its little screen. Not a fat lot of use to me in that state.2

Ironic, given that this...

Tablet

... was the first item on the email that just caused its minor eructation.

This is a fun little film I watched when it arrived the other day though it's yet to appear3 within DVD Profiler's vast database.

It's nearly time to saddle up the Yaris for my second outing. The Figg tea-rooms have re-opened for business, I'm glad to say. Compensates for the blasted Wimbledon that has displaced Kermode and Mayo's Film Review to 21:00 tonight, thus ensuring I will almost certainly forget to tune in.

"Dammit, Janet!"

The next issue of "The Word" will be the last. Bang go my monthly 'taster' CDs.

Having half-heard a radio news snippet, I'm happy to see this:

Toyota recall

Not that I suspect my Yaris would ever be capable of uncontrolled acceleration :-)

Footnotes

1  Or the queues of Friday early-rising shoppers much more extended.
2  "Acting on information received" (thanks, Len) firmly holding down the power button for 10 seconds provoked a cold boot and all was soon sweetness and a lit screen.
3  Perhaps lesbian musical rom-coms are a bit of a minority niche?
