2012 — 19 April: Thursday

Another distinctly moist, grey morning1 so far — far being a mere 06:42 at the moment.

See Facts

Although the 7-page "love letter" to Ceefax by Matthew Engel has a nice sting at the end of its first page, I preferred his opening paragraph here:

Ceefax

I was one of the regular users back in the days (long before the web, of course) when I was tracking guvmint 'official' stats on retail price inflation — what a monumental waste of time that little effort was :-)

Faced with the crab

What to say? What not to say? Who's to say? The best points are made in the final paragraph of a good piece. Source and snippet:

The thing is this: giant illness is a time of great intensity, and even the most cack-handed expressions of support or love are better than a smack in the face with a wet tea-towel. People feel helpless when they see that their friend is suffering. Sometimes — often — they say the wrong thing. But they are there, doing the best that they can, at a terrible, abject time. That's the most important thing of all.

Deborah Orr in The Grauniad

Couldn't agree more. [Pause] It's been too long since I last played Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia — a mistake I'm now rectifying. And why does the word 'rectifying' instantly provoke a sense memory of the smell of ozone from the Hornby Dublo power supply I used over 50 years ago? Not to mention the many hours I used to spend reading these magazines...

Meccano

... and playing with Meccano? I wonder whatever became of the little boy that lived inside me :-)

Right. Almost time to head out for my lunch rendezvous. At least it's had the decency to stop raining.

How to fix...

... any computer, heh? Well, it made me laugh. (Link.)

And, despite feeling a little bit "got at" (after all, I am largely unhirsute) ...

Twilight

... the web site does sell a T-shirt showing a 'statement' I wholeheartedly agree with:

Tesla

Tesla was a fascinating chap. A return for me to the Indian restaurant in Colden Common, by the way, for lunch — it was Len's first time there. He approves. [Pause] And now some hail and even a crash of thunder. Soon be time for an evening snack — having stuffed myself at lunch I need very little more today, methinks.

1  April showers, I guess.
