2012 — 13 February: Monday

The sun is just rearing its welcome head above the roof of a neighbour's house1 and the initial cuppa has reached optimum drinking temperature. The not-always-unirritating Andrew Collins is sitting in for the usual BBC 6Music breakfast show host, and may well end up driving me back to Radio 3.

Although I like to kid myself I live life on the edge, I think the remnants of last week's crockpot lurking on the lowest shelf of my fridge are probably, by now, on the point of developing a rich (microbial or fungal) inner life of their own, and are best cast into the pit (as it were). So, when I return from my 'Gecko' adventure I shall have to don my shopping hat. Besides, I've just received a £15 set of cash-back vouchers from my preferred grocer.

Some seven hours later...

... the sun is not that far from the horizon, and the shopping hat will have to wait. A late lunch (or is that an early 'tea'?) takes priority. It's 16:20 and "mine eyes have seen the glory of" an upscaled Blu-ray projected at 4K resolution on a screen three times wider than my puny little 60" plasma. Since there's no way it would fit into the living room I don't really have to give it too much thought, but I must say the picture was pretty stunning (though, again, slightly lacking in the black level department). That may have been more to do with some of the source material, but we did watch quite a wide range of stuff, and I got that impression more or less across the board.

Some while ago...

... Walter Hill made an enjoyable film called "The Driver". This gave James Sallis the idea for a short noirish novel called "Drive", and this ended up last year as a film called "Drive" directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (none of whose work I know).

BD

Did I like it? Well, Mike lent me his copy, and I paused it after about 20 minutes to order my own copy. There's an interesting Q&A session at the BFI as one of the extras, too. What's not to like?

All I wanted...

... to do was print out a "Get out of IBM free" card for my chum Tom's visit tomorrow. Thinks: better change the toner cartridge as it's got awfully faint, and I've had a spare sitting there for well over five years. It's only the wrong bl***y one, isn't it? Alas, "1300 Series" is subtly different from the HP 1320 LaserJet I've been using since April 2005. And why are genuine HP cartridges over twice the price of 'generic' refills? Anyway, I've found a supplier in Stockport who also accepts "Google Checkout", so — fingers crossed.

How did it become 23:12 already?
