2011 — 9 January: Sunday

Later today,1 we've arranged a short hop and a skip (as it were) down in the New Forest. The weather forecast looks almost tolerable. But now (00:08) it's time to shut my eyes for a while. G'night.

In "Inception" terms, ...

... I've recently risen by one level, though I don't have a totem, so I guess I can't be sure :-)

It's a frosty -3C on this level, but the sun is shining, the sky is clear, and a neighbour is having noisy problems with some aspect of his drains if the artisan from "Drainline" in his yellow jacket and heavy gloves is any indication.

A comment (among many) to this article basically suggests that "political correctness" (which I loathe) is essentially identical to "blasphemy" laws (which I loathe). "Their purpose is exactly the same: to protect their beliefs from the scalpel of reason." I have already taken Pakistan off my list of holiday destinations, but I think I would also exclude the Niger-Mali border and Arizona, and Acapulco.

I shall stick to the New Forest and parts of Hampshire, thank you very much.

You know how irritating...

... it is when, arriving back to a nice warm, peaceful house after a pleasant stroll in good company and glorious sunshine you suddenly realise you can hear some idiot's distant pounding bass from an overloud sound system? Think how stupid you feel when you also realise it's the "residual" bass from the powered subwoofer you forgot to switch off when you left the house earlier, with the rest of the system still tuned to your favourite music station. I'd just switched off the power amp on my way out.

Still, at least I now know that, at -22dB, the bass lines in "Limit to your love" (James Blake) can rattle the kitchen windows :-)

I dread to think what +15dB would do! But, since Amazon has just offered me another £2 worth of mp3 downloads, maybe I will experiment. [Pause] Well, it wasn't the windows. It turned out to be a plate on my kitchen sink's draining board rattling away like a good 'un. I'm not usually a fan of "Dance and DJ" material but I'm prepared to try anything once (except incest and Morris Dancing, of course).

It's 15:35 and the afternoon is, as it were, my oyster.

Men in Blue

Men in Blue

Just look at that sky! Now (17:03) it's at the darker end of twilight and time, I think, for my next cuppa.

Jarvis Cocker has just neatly demolished any claims astrology might have to any connection with the mucky reality of Life in this strange universe by pointing out that Freddie Starr and Scott Walker were both born, in the same year, on this day.

He makes a good point :-)

There's no such thing as...

... bad weather, only the wrong clothes. Not much comfort when, for the second time this evening, I spend time scraping ice off the see-through bits of the car before being able to drive safely. Still, there was a lovely crescent moon.
