2010 — 10 November: Wednesday
It's 09:081 and the first cuppa is a pleasant, but receding, memory. Breakfast beckons, then I shall be off and about on my next awfully big adventure. (Speaking of which reminds me that tomorrow will see me embarking on my 4th year as a widower. Utterly baffling where the time has gone, let alone trying to wrap my head around Christa's permanent absence from this stretch of Life's little Highway.)
KBO :-)
Meanwhile, following a phone chat with Peter and Peter's g/f last night, here's but one of the little gems to contemplate. And this makes my present little toe-in-the-water multi-core approach look very tentative indeed! Cool. (Well, not really, when you count up all the fans.)
Speaking of fans, sis-in-law down in faraway New Zealandland was worried I hadn't spotted the photo showing the back of niece #2's head that Big Bro snuck into his book (page 203) while she (Dangermouse) was doing her "Avatar" thing (flying a helichopper2 in the Solomons). I hadn't — and you can check it out here, too, though I cropped her "bachelor of the year" co-pilot out of the shot.
What is one supposed to make (from the BBC Radio 4 national news) of the assertion: "Prosperity without freedom is just another form of poverty"? Beats me, chief, but it's almost as snappy as one of the slogans from Orwell's "1984".
Blue skies, Blu-rays, etc
One could hardly return from a satisfactory encounter with my new chum at "Novatech" without swinging by "Best Buy" in Hedge End to give my main co-pilot a chance to stretch his legs, ignite one of his Camels, and pick up the new Robert Plant CD for his wife, could one? So I now have the missing SATA leads for the DVD rewriter, and four Blu-rays to note, not to mention a couple of books and a DVD that I'd spotted last week down in Bournemouth but decided to buy online...
- A Clockwork Orange
Kubrick's other masterpiece (much better than the book) - Salò
I cannot pretend Pasolini was a "comfy" film maker, but it's usually an interesting ride - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
replacing my Region 3 DVD from Hong Kong - The Golden Compass
I thought this was a fine attempt to capture the spirit of the Pullman book
- The Ricky Gervais Show
having been impressed (very much) by the film Cemetery Junction, I gave in and got the "Ricky Gervais" animation show (unseen, but after having listened to some of the podcasts several years ago) - A feast of Freud
Clement Freud has been making me chortle for many years though I actually hated the "Just a minute" radio show - Arthur Ransome, master storyteller
what it says on the tin, as it were. My "Swallows and Amazons" set of hardbacks is now underneath the plasma screen
Having satiated the inner man...
... with another culinary masterpiece, I see that Mr Postie is quite determined to keep me entertained on the long winter evenings looming ahead:
- Starman
back in January I spent some time tracking this wonderful film down as the source of some haunting music that Brian Sibley used behind one of his radio programmes about Hollywood. I finally caved, and imported the Blu-ray - Jeff / You had it coming
tall young Thomas revived my interest in Jeff Beck when he lent me a 1999 CD ("Who else!") that I've now played four times - Dougal and the Blue Cat / Magic Roundabout
no explanation necessary, I trust! I recently heard the delectable Phyllida Law talking about Eric Thompson (her husband and Emma Thompson's Dad, of course) on one of my spoken word minidiscs
It's 15:02 and time to see if I can interest my long-suffering neighbour in a cuppa somewhere.
Next thing you know, it's time to go. Back later, or tomorrow!
