2010 — 11 September: Saturday

No more Mr Grumpy.1 But now (01:10) it's about time for some sleep.

G'night.

And, ten hours later, time to zip out for the one vital ingredient I forgot to buy for my next crockpot. Bother!

Though unsupported by logic...

... dear ol' Dad often used to say "Everything comes to he who waits". (Usually before my birthday.) He may well be right.

I first became aware of Dr Temple Grandin via an article by Oliver Sacks in the "New Yorker".2 The article subsequently appeared as "An anthropologist on Mars" in his collection of that title in 1995. I noted she was a consultant on that excellent film "Snow Cake" a couple of years ago. Anyway, fast forward a bit more. Back in February, the "WSJ" mentioned an HBO film based on her life and work (their link has now expired, or maybe just retreated behind a paywall). The film's now appeared on DVD, weighed down by 15 Emmy nominations and awards.

DVD

My copy arrived this morning from Amazon in the U.S. I'm confidently predicting it will be this evening's entertainment. Dad was right.

A taxing job?

Our top civil servant in Brenda's tax shop sees no need to apologise or resign. He must have been coached by Sir Humphrey, surely? (Source.)

I know I used to feel quite stressed in IBM if I accidentally gave a few tens of thousands of our Java users duff info. I think if I'd sent out incorrect tax demands to 6,000,000 fellow citizens I'd look around for a new job.

Later

Nice phone call from Peter's g/f, who will persist in trying to drag me out of my comfy shell. And tomorrow morning's walk is now sorted out. Judging by the rumbling tum it's about time to unleash the crockpot, though how it's already 18:35 remains a total mystery.

Too late now (23:14) to start the film — I hadn't been expecting tall young Thomas to call round with a wish to hear some of his favourite Zappa music (I gather some of his system is still in a box in his loft following his recent move, and I can sympathise with domestic entropy levels).

Footnotes

1  Not after watching "Clash of the Titans" and a couple more episodes of "West Wing" Season #5. Monteverdi's Vespers was excellent, too.
2  Carol kept me supplied with that excellent magazine (which I've read, on and off, since the 1960s) while I retaliated with "The Guardian Weekly".
