2010 — 10 March: Wednesday

After midnight again. Tut, tut. Just spent 40 minutes or so leafing idly through an unread pile of "Sunday Times" colour supplements without really spotting anything of much note. And BBC 6Music is telling me all about Jimi Hendrix (who almost pre-dates the original supplements!)

G'night.

Shock, horror

The chief spook says she only found out about torture after she'd retired. One of those banks I now own will be paying bonuses despite continued losses. There's a new variant of Russian roulette. 60,000 inmates with short prison sentences are not being rehabilitated and go on to commit further crimes on release, costing up to £10,000,000,000 per year — cheaper to pay them £16,666 each. Tories, needless to say, are promising a rehabilitation revolution. The mind boggles. But today's weather is going to be bright and dry. So, at 08:35, all's right with GB plc.

And, at 09:02, I shall contemplate some breakfast.

I just knew comics would one day become worthy of academic study! (Source.) As for more conventional evolution:

As the Victorians used to say about sexual intercourse, if God decided that we should reproduce in such a disgusting way, then it is for us to accept this fact and put it in context. The same can be said about Darwinian evolution.

I often joke, as one who spends a lot of time fighting creationists, that when one of them says something silly, that means more work for me: bread on the table. When one of them says something really silly, there is strawberry jam, too. In 2005, after a trial in Dover, Pa., a federal judge ruled that intelligent design should not be taught in schools. Pat Robertson's response — "God is tolerant and loving, but we can't keep sticking our finger in his eye forever. If they have future problems in Dover, I recommend they call on Charles Darwin. Maybe he can help them" — kept me and my family well fed for weeks.

The Stephen Jay Gould pun was new to me, too.

Lad who lunches

To celebrate my safe return from the 'metrollops' and the partial success of my fishing expedition (birthday card? check; next issue of "Word" magazine? uncheck) I shall sup a cuppa and make something to eat. It's 13:19 and sunny but really rather cold.

Thanks, Mr Postie

I should hate it to be thought that I'm devoid of stuff to watch...

... even if I am going out tonight!

I can see clearly now... dept.

Amazing what you can find on the Interweb, isn't it? Here's the Hi-Def Review Index, for example. Nor was I familiar with "Bokeh". Let alone these lists.
