2010 — 15 February: Monday

It's 01:46 and counting. The last cuppa has just been sunk, along with a couple of Ritz crackers. The evening's enjoyable videofest started with an amiable crime caper High Life, paused for a meal, moved on to The Last Mimzy (which Mike enjoyed as much as I had yesterday) and culminated with his Blu-ray of the latest Star Trek picture. I'm convinced there are some temporal paradoxes to be nailed there, but it will take a second viewing so I've borrowed the disc.

Meanwhile, I was tickled to learn that Zeno's son was featured in this exhibition, pleased to be offered a loan of the surviving fragments of "A for Andromeda" by Len, and mustn't forget I'm due to meet Iris for lunch in just a few hours from now. That leaves me time to note just a few of the more outrageous idiocies before I call it a night.

What a wonderful world, indeed. G'night.

I'm greatly reassured...

... to learn that being obese is much more complicated than simply eating more calories than you burn staying alive while fending off granny's totally mouth-watering apple pies and freshly-baked bread.

Obese

Let alone avoiding "third-hand" smoking from residues on her "Racing Journal" and the ancient, nicotine-stained walls of her decrepit kitchen in Smethwick. (I'm thinking of my granny here, not my son's.)

What do you think, Mowgli? Is there time to nip out for a few of the "bear necessities" before tracking down Iris for lunch? It's 10:28 and almost drizzly out there in the big wide world.

There was. Now (13:52) I'm off in vague search of a CD in town. No rest for the wicked. "I may be gone for some time".

Somewhat later

Not sure how, but it already seems to be 18:19 and I suppose an evening meal now needs to intrude on my other activities. Found an interesting music gadget here, though I can't claim to know (or even to have heard of) many of the names. If you recall that lovely Jim Croce song:

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them

Saint Pilling has spoken, this time on the quality of screen font display on Windows:

Obese

I'd agree, more or less. Mind you, in 1990 I was using my Acorn A440 RISC system with a 14" CRT multisync monitor of about SVGA resolution though with a 50Hz refresh rate so it's a wonder I can still see anything 20 years later. (All four of my current PC screens are 24" LCD with 1920x1200 resolution. I still vaguely hanker after a 30" display, but where would I put it?)

Ever noticed how ignoring hunger doesn't really make you less hungry? Time to go and eat, David. It's now 18:50...

Later still

Well, I haven't cracked those temporal paradoxes yet, but I remain convinced that a 60" screen is insufficient to do justice to a well-mastered high-definition image. How very annoying :-)

Perhaps I'm not drinking enough Scotch?
