Tonight's picture of Christa shows her with #1 niece down at Lepe country park on 1st April 2007:

Starting as I mean to go on, here's an excellent Dave Allen joke that was new to me:

A preacher was describing the torments of hell, concluding that,
In Hell there will be wailing and weeping and gnashing of teeth.
What if you don't have teeth? asks an elderly parishioner.
Teeth will be provided.

A wry comment on Jesus and Mo

G'night.

Bright and shiny

The sun is shining; Barbara Flynn is reading from a new biography of Somerset Maugham; I have a piping hot cuppa at hand; Lis likes the photo today (almost yesterday, now, from her inverted point of view 12,000 miles away). Must pop out to post Peter's computing book to him, then I have a lunch date. Where shall we go this time, I wonder?

Some stories are sufficiently stupid as to need no further comment. Here's one.

Can you name the author of this opening sentence without peeking at the source?

The Summer had died peacefully in its sleep, and Autumn, as soft-spoken executrix, was locking life up safely until Spring came to claim it.

A review in The NYT

Smoke 'em if you got 'em

Morning chores concluded in time for a "lemonses" bunch of grapes break before my visitor arrives to whisk me away. I must say these late grapes are just about at their peak of condition. If this isn't global climate change then there's something else strange going on. I've also left the car out in some hopes of an afternoon expotition in what looks like a brief burst of further glorious weather ahead of the next deluge. Last of the summer wine, that's me. Just don't call me "Compo".

Right. It's 14:29, I'm replete and ready for an afternoon cuppa somewhere. Mustn't forget my wallet this time!

An ordered list, in guvmint disarray

Our esteemed (unelected) leader apparently has described cannabis as "lethal". I presume he's therefore correspondingly far more worried about, say, alcohol or tobacco:

Drugs

Aah! But don't alcohol and tobacco bring in lots of lovely tax revenue? That wouldn't be a factor, surely?

Nearly time (17:38) for my tea-time soldiers, or is salmonella a drug, too? It's mildly ironic to see that the only broadcast TV programme of any interest (to me) tonight is one about John Logie Baird and TV itself.

Later

Having devoured the light repast that was a couple of boiled eggs and the latest "Ansible" I see that almost the last thing in it is a link to an interesting blog (warning: spoilers!) here by Adam Roberts.
