2009 — 25 September: Friday

Towards the back end of 1974 Christa and I were regular visitors to my parents' place in High Wycombe. My Dad was ailing at that point so we were doing what we could to help out. I'd date this to perhaps October of that year.

Christa in High Wycombe, October 1974

Mind you, I may yet unearth a cache of old diaries and be able to pinpoint it more closely. Christa kept all sorts of notes and journals. Meanwhile, I took a break from further scanning to stew another batch of plums and blackcurrants. Healthy and tasty; what's not to like?

G'night.

Of all the people...

... to hear on NPR just after waking up, Orson Scott Card1 (talking about the fantastic novel "Ender's Game") is about the unlikeliest. He's almost exactly my age, too. What an odd world.

It's just gone 09:02, the sun is shining, the air is pretty damn cool, and I need a cuppa. That's better. Tonight's programme on a classic "Doors" album looks unmissable. Not least because this was one of Christa's favourite records. And mine. (I've yet to find the box with my CD in it, but there's a lot of loft left to explore.)

No wonder they...

... call it a "spread"! Big Bro has just sent over an overhead shot of his salubrious little NZ pad. I wonder which niece arranged the helicopter flight? (He's cunningly removed all the meta data [or Photoshop Elements 6 did] from the JPEG so there's no clue there.)

The NZ spread

He suggests there is plenty of space for lodgers. (Compare and contrast!) Perhaps I should have gone with aircraft rather than computers? (No, I don't think so.)

Who could have resisted...

... the (al)lure of Soton on a lovely, sunny lunchtime? Not me. And I snaffled me a DVD I'd thought was long out of print. But, after a very quick bite and a mouthful or two of OJ it's time to unearth a clean shirt and toddle on over to Roger and Eileen to blag a cuppa and (who knows?) maybe even a biscuit. It's 15:02 and the weekend of north-going motorway madness has already started if the "50" sign at the entrance was any indication. (Or the relative lack of busy background motorway noise, now that I listen.) Any road up, I dodged it.

Back, and the evening meal has been supped, too. I should now have a clear run up to that "Doors" documentary, though I note there's a profile of Jim Morrison on immediately after it, too. One thing at a time, David. It's 18:22 and a nice, if quite cool, sunny autumn evening ahead of us, it seems.

I've actually had the Louis Malle film on order for over 18 months from the US. I spotted it while trawling gently through HMV. It was his 1981 follow-up to the equally wonderful "Atlantic City", though (of course) vastly different. "The Spirit"... well, Will Eisner is a class act, and Frank Miller did well with his stint on "Sin City". I admit that "FAQ about time travel" is, as it were, a shot in the dark. We shall see.

DVDs and Blu-ray

Footnote

1  His "novelisation" (dreadful word) of the screenplay of James Cameron's film "The Abyss" sets the high-water mark (if you'll forgive the pun) of that particular literary genre.
