2009 — 3 March: Tuesday

Tonight's picture of Christa and Peter, setting off for some form of Junior school dressing-up (as a robot, I believe) day:

Christa and Peter in 1987 or so

When did it become midnight, by the way? Still, when I wheeled out the black bin a few minutes ago I realised what I'd been hearing on the skylight was, indeed, rain. I'm very pleased with my image viewing progress via the Linux box, running the newly-installed gThumb image viewer in fullscreen mode, exactly as I wanted...

... particularly as I can use the wireless keyboard and mouse to flick through the images from my preferred armchair about 3 metres from the PC. (It's about a foot to the left of "Winston Churchill" — my pair of dogs on the top of the left hand loudspeaker.) G'night at 00:17 or thereabouts.

I see from the time...

... that I've repaid some of the sleep debt. It's already 09:05 and time for the cuppa that cheers. Looks somewhat moist out there, and no more blue skies at the moment. No matter.

I've been invited to update my copy of Scrivener. My last attempt ended in tears, and I can't say I've missed it since. But then I haven't needed anything much in the way of DTP beyond my OvationPro and I never really have got on with text outliners. I do my textual outlining in the grey matter behind my eyes. I've also been invited to update the firmware in my Blu-ray player. I shan't do that until I'm certain it won't unhack the multi-region capability. (A mere 95.3 MB of zip file.) Betcha it's a Java tweak.

Having satiated the inner man (for a while) it's time (13:01) to hit that supplies trail.

I had to laugh. I've just heard The wasp factory1 described on BBC Radio 4 as "complete drivel" — not sure I could have put that any better myself. So. It's 16:47. What have I been up to and where have I been? After the mundane business of food and drink, I toddled down into Southampton, partly to suss out the state of play (as it were) with Blu-ray material in our High Street2 and partly because it seems a long time since I was last in Borders.

It's amazing what you can find in the "bargain" bin...

DVDs

With the exception of the Todd Haynes film, these are all TV series that I missed some or all of, but have had recommended. So it can rain as much as it likes for a little while — I shall simply batten down my hatches (as it were).

Nicely put

The first of nine writers...

Sitting alone in a room for hours while essentially talking in your head about people you made up earlier and then writing it down for no one you know does have many aspects which are not inherently fulfilling... And then it's over, which is even better. I'm with RL Stevenson — having written — that's the good bit.

AL Kennedy in The Guardian

Dare I tune into that dweadful Woss chap later for his take on the "Watchmen" film, I wonder? BBC Radio 4's arts strand wasn't impressed. Meanwhile, I mentioned a superfluity of MicroSpit security updates:

Footnotes

1  As I said on Day 0 of this retirement skylark, I keep trying to enjoy Iain Banks, but without success.
2  In one word: "pathetic".
