2008 — Tangled roots

These have a beautifully non-fractal structure! When I was even less than about ten years old, I loved watching the pictures in a coal fire. I also loved the sort of fairy tales that had creatures (wood sprites, nymphs, goblins, you name 'em) blending into apparently natural woodland objects. I also needed glasses for myopia, which may have had a bearing on my perceptions of course... Don't forget to scroll down to the bottom of the page, will you?

Looking more carefully, and remembering the Friday evening trivia quiz question about the sculptor of the Three Graces, am I alone in seeing three charming chipmunks atop this incredible root? And is one of them possibly a little too pleased to see us?
